Eight successive stages over the lifespan
- Trust vs. mistrust (infancy)

- without self-confidence = guilt

Basic to sense of achievement…mastery of tools/technology
Identity vs. role confusion

Basic to sense of identity
-abstract reasoning, first love, romance, sexuality
Separate from sense of self, because identity is external while self is internal
Intimacy vs. isolation?
Young adult
Forming intimate relationships, friendships, lovers
Basic sense of closeness, connectedness, support
Generativity vs. stagnation?
Middle Adult
Forming and guiding the next generation, productivity, creativity

Person must adaptively or maladaptively cope with task in each developmental stage
-determines personality development
Basic strengths: motivating characteristics and beliefs that derive from successful resolution of crisis in each stage
