lecture 29 Flashcards
how much of bacteria in the environment are auxotrophs
98%
without culturing how can we indentify bacteria
the 16s ribosomal RNA gene,
what does proliferate mean
increase rapidly in number
populations of microbes interact to form what
communities
whats a microbiome
all microorganisms, and their genes, within a
particular environment
whats enrichment culture
providing the temperature and
chemical conditions in the laboratory that encourage
the growth of specific groups of microbes.
whats a mesocosm
experimental conditions that simulates the real environment
why do we indentify bacteria by the 16s ribosomal RNA
the 16s ribosomal RNA is a key component of the ribosome. all organisms have this sequence as they all have ribosomes. this sequence is therefore highly conserved but also variable for different species. thus we use it as a molecular fingerprint.
whats bacterias food source
inorganic molecules
phototrophs get their energy from what
light
how do phototrophs reduce interspecific competition
is to tune their antenna to different wavelengths of light
whats catabolism
breaks down the reactants into building blocks and energy
whats anabolism
we take these building blocks and enegy to build macromolecules.
