Lecture 28: Kim dirks transport lecture Flashcards
What is the commuter environment
The built environment related specifically to facilitate people moving around. Influences travel behaviours therefore indirectly health
Describe 3 levels of factors that the commuter environment influences
transport mode and route choice
-Individual level factors: time to wake up, fitness level,
-Upstream factors:
Bus timetabling/routes, bike/car storage,
-Environmental factors:
Hills, Walkability, Safety, Weather
What will make cycling more attractive for most people
- Low traffic volume at low speed on residential streets, 2.Separate cycleway on motorway and
- mixed land use so everything close to home.
Identify the ways in which travel mode and route choice impact on
health and well-being (air pollution exposure and exercise)
Despite Active forms of transport (cycling, walking/running) having fitness as a health benefit, when taking into account breathing rate and travel time, Walk bike run has the highest dose of air pollution
What is the trend in air pollution exposure with relation to the centre line
Air pollution concentration decreases the further away from road centre line.
Describe some structural ways that air pollution exposure for active modes of transport can be minimised
Separation of the cycleway from the centreline +3m =pedestrians and cyclists have same level of air pollution dose as car.
- Noise barriers can reduce air pollution for cycleways parallel to motorway
- Moving the bus stop from intersections, means less polluted air trapped inside the bus
Discuss ways in which an individual can minimize adverse health impacts
Which side of the street you walk: pollution worse on busy side and queued cars vs free flow.
Walking through a park- more separation from road better
Discuss features of urban planning that are health promoting with respect to travel and encourage ‘healthy choices’
Big structures:
Bus & bike only lane on motorway, Innercity rail link , T2/3 lanes
Small changes: changing phasing of traffic lights to favour pedestrians: walkability
Programmes: Walking school bus: safety skills, need volunteers tho
As well as being affordable and efficient, an important part of transport systems is
promoting health
As the city intensities we need to move to sustainable transport.
Sustainability =
safety= healthy environment
