Lecture 25: Posterior Abdominal Wall Flashcards
What muscles make up the posterior abdominal wall?
- Psoas major
- Psoas minor
- Iliacus
- Quadratus lumborum
What are the three unpaired branches of the abdominal aorta?
- Celiac trunk
- Superior mesenteric artery
- Inferior mesenteric artery
Describe landmarks for the beginning and termination of the abdominal aorta
extends from aortic hiatus to bifurcation into common iliac
What are the three paired visceral branches of the abdominal aorta?
- Middle suprarenal arteries
- Renal arteries
- Gonadal arteries
What are the five paired somatic branches of the abdominal aorta?
- inferior phrenic arteries
- four pairs of lumbar segmental arteries
What are the terminal branches of the celiac trunk?
- splenic artery
- left gastric artery
- common hepatic artery
What are the branches of the common hepatic artery?
• Right hepatic • Left hepatic • Cystic artery • Right gastric - gastroduodenal
Where does the right gastric artery travel?
along lesser curvature of stomach
where does the right gastroepiploic artery travel?
along greater curvature of stomach
Where does the superior pancreaticoduodenal artery travel and what does it supply?
travels along head of pancreas and supplies duodenum and pancreas
What does the superior mesenteric artery supply?
most of the duodenum and intestine to left colic flexure
What does the right colic artery supply?
ascending colon
What does the ileocolic artery supply?
ileum, cecum, appendix and ascending colon
What does the inferior mesenteric artery supply?
intestine beginning with left colic flexure to upper half of anal canal
What are the branches of the inferior mesenteric artery?
left colic branch
sigmoid arteries
superior rectal artery
what does the left colic branch supply?
descending colon
What does the sigmoid arteries supply?
descending and sigmoid colon
What does the superior rectal artery supply?
proximal rectum
What are the paired lateral branches of the aorta?
- Suprarenal
- Inferior phrenic
- Renal: Gives off five segmental arteries
- Testicular or ovarian
- Lumbar (4 pairs)
What are the terminal branches of the aorta?
common iliacs
median sacral
What forms the inferior vena cava?
union of paired common iliac veins
What is the definition of a portal system?
• Venous connection
between two organs other than the heart
• Vein connecting two capillary beds
What are examples of a portal system?
- Hepatic
- Hypophyseal
- Renal (not in mammals)
What do the thoracoabdominal nerves (T7-T11) innervate?
anterior abdominal muscles, overlying skin and peripheral diaphragm
