Intake: pregnancy = 450 mg/day, Lactation = 550 mg/day

How does iron contribute to pregnancy and what should intake look like?
substantial requirement due to increased usage
Intake: 450 mg to increase RBC mass, 300 mg for fetal/placenta, 250 mg lost at delivery ⇒ at least 1000 mg required throughout pregnancy to meet needs
