Lecture 24, Chpt. 27 -- Climate change part 2 Flashcards
Define phenology
Timing of seasonal plant & animal activity - reproduction, growth, migration, flowering, leaf out
How are caribou altered by phenology?
They live in the tundra and are herbivores, with increased climate change (temperatures) it has longer growing season
- they are timed to give birth during times off high resource availability so they are giving birth when there is not enough food therefore babies are dying
How climate change impact ecosystem level changes like NPP, decomposition, and carbon cycling?
- respiration increasing faster than photosynthesis
- increased CO2 in the air = fertilization effect
- too many plants growing - not enough resources and can’t take up the other elements like nitrogen either
What species is having the highest rate of extinction?
mammals
Define ecosystem services
we need intact forest ecosystems for timber (houses)
healthy soils for food
Earth is reaching a tipping point due to what?
human activities such as
agriculture
mining
consumption patterns
human population growth
How can humans stabilize the earth?
- by using less fossil fuels
-government policy that is geared in clean energy, less waste, etc. - better transportation
- businesses reducing waste-
