Lecture 21 - Chapter 24 - Marine systems Flashcards
Define an estuary
interface/mixing of freshwater rivers and saltwater ocean
- sediments (nutrient rich) from upriver are deposited here
Define salt marshes and mangroves
- Salt marshes are found in temperate zones
- mangroves found in tropical zones
- in coastal areas, protected from wave action
- both are areas of low diversity
Why are salt marshes and mangroves areas of low diveristy?
- Flooding,
- exposure to salt water
- Unstable surfaces like sand and mud
cause stress to primary producers (plants)
In mangrove areas, how do plants manage said stress?
- pneumatophores (specialized in gas exchange stick up from the ground)
- aerial prop roots (provide extra support)
What are 4 zones of the ocean?
- intertidal zone
- benthic environment
- neritic province
- oceanic province
Define the intertidal zone
area of the shore between low and high tide
Define the benthic env.
ocean floor from the edge of the intertidal zone to deep ocean trenches
define neritic province
surface ocean waters from 0 to 200 m (656 feet) deep
Define the oceanic province
deep sea all ocean water > 200 m deep and away from the shore
What are the sources of stress in the intertidal zone?
- temperature fluctuation
- exposure to air
- human activity
- movement of waves (animals need to be stable)
List the 4 zones in the rocky intertidal
- spray zone
- high zone
- mid zone
- low zone
What kind of surfaces can be found in intertidal zones?
- rocky
- sandy and muddy
Define the spray zone
-submerged only during very high spring tides or storms
- often wet from waves and windblown spray
Define the high zone
- flooded only at the peak of spring tides
Define the mid zone
-submerged much of the time
- zone is between average high and low tide
define the low zone
- exposed only rarely during very low spring tides
Out of the 4 rocky zones, which one is most stressful and why?
Spray zone because its dry, hot, and less submerging
Out of the 4 rocky zones, where would diversity be high and low?
Highest - down close the ocean- mid zone
low - spray zone
How do animals live in the stressful rocky intertidal environments? (adaptations)
- snails secrete mucus (under foot)
- algae (slimy) - prevents it from drying out since it floats on top
- crabs - super mobile so can move if too hot, dry, hunt, hide
- barnacles - open and close their shells according to tides
Describe the sandy & muddy intertidal zones
- detrital food webs tend to be dominate - inputs from dead algae, animals, fecal material
- most organisms live beneath the surface such as bacteria, sand dollars, starfish
- fish and birds are important predators here
- below the line there is predatory snails and crabs
What is another name for neritic provinces?
continental shelves
What are continental shelves home too?
coral reefs
shallow waters
rich with diversity
Why do coral reefs thrive in the neritic province?
- they require access to light so this shelf provides it
- allows a symbiotic relationship between algae called zooxanthellae
Who are the dominant primary producers in the neritic zone?
Phytoplankton
What forms the base of the food web in the benthic environment?
dead organic material !
Who lives in the benthic zone?
- lots of worms
- fish with their own lights
- crustaceans
- bacteria
