Lecture 24 Flashcards
What are the long term changes in total stream flow for glaciers
Will have increased flow at first, then will hit peak flow and reduce after that because glacier will have shrunk a lot by then
What can be done to adapt to melting glaciers
Cut carbon emissions to try and prevent climate change, build dams or water storage systems, conserve water
Problems that are created by melting glaciers
- changes in stream flow patterns from glacier melt(short term increase and long term decrease
2 floods from glacier outburst floods
Where does glacial meltwater go?
Channeled into streams and rivers, used for drinking irrigation, power generation etc…
Unstable glacial lakes example
Water that collects behind the terminal moraine(proglacial lakes)
Usually unstable and present hazards to nearby people in “outburst floods”
What could cause the moraine dam to fail
overfilling, seismic activity, landslides sending a wave
Assessing disaster risk
- Hazard
- Exposure
- Vulnerability
