Lecture 18 Flashcards
1
Q
How do we measure Glacier flow
A
Surface velocity is measure with stakes, GPS, repeat aerial photography or satellite imagery
Velocity in the ice is measured from tilting of a borehole with time
2
Q
How do crevasses form
A
Forms when ice breaks apart as it moves
Form in the upper, rigid, part of the glacier where ice speeds up, such as down steep slopes
3
Q
How fast does a glacier move?
A
Glacier flows fastest at the center and near the top
Glacier flows slowest along the slides and near the base
4
Q
Can water ever flow uphill
A
Yes under pressure
5
Q
How does water get to the bottom of the glacier for basal sliding?
A
- Pressure melting of ice at the base
- Transfer of water from surface melt to base
