lecture 12 Flashcards
Sea Ice
Forms from cold sea water, (different from glaciers, ice sheets and icebergs which forms from accumulated snow)
Why is sea ice important
Has a high albedo, Provides habitat, affects navigable waters and access to natural resources etc…
Effects of salinity on freezing temp
Freezing temp of water decreases
How sea ice is formed (types of ice)
Small ice crystals grow - Frazil ice(grease ice) -> small pancake ice -> medium pancake ice -> Large Pancake ice -> Pack ice
What is brine
Salt in seawater is not incorporate in ice crystals so pockets of brine can be trapped in the ice
First year sea ice
Formed over one winter then completely melts in summer, weaker, more brine so saltier
Multi - year sea ice
Sea ice that lasted more than a year, stronger, less brine so fresher
Compression ridges
Due to collisions between blocks of ice, keel below surface thicker than sail above
Leads
Linear breaks in sea ice caused by stretching
Polynas
Rounder areas of open water caused by winds, or melting of sea ice by warm water underneath
Will there be more multi-year ice in the arctic or antarctic
