4
Q

define external auditory meatus

A

outer 1/3 is composed of elastic cartilage
inner 2/3 is composed of bone
lined with stratified squamous epithelium with sebaceous and ceruminous glands

5
Q

what is the tympanic membran

A

separates the external auditory canal from middle ear

core is formed from vascularized, innervated connective muscle (this is why it hurts if we get something in our ear)

6
Q

what are the parts of the auditory ossicle

A

malleus (hammer): attaches to tympanic membrane and articulates with incus
incus (anvil): intermediate bone between the stapes and malleus
stape: third bone in series, shaped like stirrup, inserts into oval window

9
Q

what are the muscles of the middle ear

A

tensor tympani: inserts into the malleus
stapedius: inserts on the stapes
these both dampen the vibration of loud sounds that go to the auditory ossicles

Q

what is the baby labyrinth

A

carved into the bone at the base of the skull

consists of semicircular canals, cochlea, scala vestibuli, scala tympani

Q

what is the membranous labyrinth

A

lines the baby labyrinth

complex system of membraneous structures embedded within the chambers of the bony labyrinth

12
Q

what is the vestibular organ

A

located in inner ear
primarily assocated with equilibrium and balance
patches of sensory structures that respond to changes in position
consists of maculae of the saccule and utricle

13
Q

define otolithic membrane

A

gelatinous layer containing calcium carbonate crystals called otoliths that overlies the epithelium
stereocilia of the vestibular hair cells are embedded in this gelatinous layer
movement of the head displaces the otolithic membrane and causes a sensory impulse

14
Q

what is the cupla

A

gelatinous layer similar to the otolithic membrane but does not have otoliths (in cristae ampullares of semicircular ducts)

15
Q

what does movement of fluid do to the cupula

A

displaces it and causes the sterocilia to bend

16
Q

what does the auditory organ of the inner ear consist of

A

cochlear duct, scala vestibuli, scala tympani, vestibular membrane, basillar membrane, stria vascularis, organ of corti

17
Q

what forms the floor and roof of the cochlear duct

A

vestibular membrane: roof

basilar membrane: floor

18
Q

what does the stria vascularis do

A

forms the lateral aspect of the duct

participates in the formation of the endolympth

19
Q

where is the organ of corti located

A

lies on the basilar membrane

20
Q

what is contained in the outer ear

A

auricle, external auditory meatus, tympanic membrane
