Lecture 22-25 Flashcards
Organisational (industrial) Psychology
about personal and interpersonal aspect. Human factors is more about design
Transition process
mission analysis (forward and backwards), goal specification (forwards), strategy formulation
Action
Monitoring progress towards goal
Systems monitoring - both internal and external resources
Team monitoring and backup behavior - strong as your weakest link
Coordination - communicating info and coordinating tasks
Interpersonal processes
Conflict management - preemptive or reactive
Motivation. And confidence building - giving feedback, hyping them up and social encouragement
Affect management - emotions can become difficult. Trying to calm individuals. Team building can help!
Remote working benefit
Save $$, No commute, better work/life balance, Reduce residential costs - doesn’t matter where you live, Decrease in stress, Better pay, Better relationship with supervisor. BUT you become a bit less social, this research was done before lockdown and there’s equity issues
Zoom fatigue
greater with camera on. In person have better and more creative conversations
Screening
shows whether people may be suitable for a job. - Sometimes seen as moer excluding people than selecting people
Issues relevant to evaluations
Approach to the evaluation - if you need to pass to get the job you might lie. Underreporting - minimise issues they have. Detected through testing and inconsistency. Psychological testing is good for that! One does one that most people are willing to admit and it shows if people are painting a picture too good to be true
Abnormal function tests and normal functioning tests are most common and are used often! AVOID MYERS-BRIGGS TYPE INDICATORS THOUGH. Not about public safety, its about personality
California POST dimensions
Police officer training
Emotional regulation and stress tolerance
Avoiding damage and excessive risk-taking behavior
Impulse control and attention to safety
Assertiveness/persuasiveness
Social competence
Team work
Decision-making and judgement
Adaptability and flexibility
Conscientiousness/dependability
Integrity/ethics
Everything we look at has to be focused on a personas job description. Rural communities police officers will have different duties than a urban police officer
Includes job analysis. Psychological tests, personal history information, Situation judgement tests, Mental health records, Clinical interview
Traffic psychology
draws on neuroscience and perception
Skid Training
actually puts you more at risk of an accident with skidding because you’re overconfident. Skid training should emphasise anticipation and avoidance of dangerous situations
Naturalistic driving studies
data logging. Recording people driving in the car and when they use the pedal, steering wheels etc. Its an enormous study which requires TIME AND MONEY
Instrumented vehicles
Vehicles are equipped with instruments but its in a predetermined route. More experimental as you control as much as you can
Driver simulated studies
like playing a game. Can give you motion sickness and isn’t 100% applicable to the real world
Defensive driving
Motivation matter - people do defensive driving to get their full license sooner, not to improve knowledge and make them a safe driver!
Defensive driving is still better than no defensive driving but the time discount doesn’t really help
