Lecture 20: The Brain Flashcards
What three things make up the brain stem?
Medulla, Pons, Midbrain
Reticular Formation
Groups of soma throughout the brainstem
Best known for role in consciousness and wakefulness
Ascending Tracts
Sensory tracts from the body to the cerebrum
Descending Tracts
Corticospinal “pyramidal” tracts from the cerebrum to spinal cord
Pyramidal
Each side of the brain controls the opposite side of the body except for smell
Cerebellum
Maintains posture, coordinates movement
Three parts of the Diencephalon
Thalamus (“keeper”), Epithalamus (Pineal: Melatonin + Connection to limbic system), Hypothalamus (Hormones, maintain homeostasis)
What is the largest part of the brain?
The cerebrum
Cerebrum
Controls all conscious thoughts (higher order thinking) and intellectual functions
Processes somatic memory and motor information
Corpus Callosum
Connects the two hemispheres of the cerebrum, white matter
Sulci and Gyri
Increases surface area of brain
5 Hemispheres of The Cerebrum
Temporal, Parietal, Frontal, Occipital, Insular
Three regions of gray matter
Cerebral Cortex, Basal Ganglia, Limbic System
Cerebral Cortex
Outer millimeter of brain, higher processing
Basal Ganglia
Core of cerebellum, coordination of movements and directing subconscious activities
