What is the Sympathetic Adreno-Medullary System (SAM)?

A

this is the immediate response, which is the activation of your sympathetic neurons that are located mid-way down your spine, this then activates the adrenal glands, and leads to the production or norepinephrine and epinephrine

this is a longer-term process and is the production of cortisol, the anterior pituitary gland in your brain is activated which then a signal to adrenal glands to produce cortisol

What is the short- and long-term effects of cortisol?

A

short term = increase immune function
long term = build up over time
humans are not designed to endure stress over a long time, this is a modern feeling, so cortisol is building up and can become dangerous
