Lecture 20- Stress Flashcards
What is stress as a stimulus?
this is when stress is referred to as an event that is happening
What is stress as a response?
this is when stress is referred to by how we deal with an event
What is a stress as a person-situation interaction?
this is a mix of both stress as a stimulus and response, it is about the event and the different ways that people responded to the events
What is cognitive appraisal?
cognitive appraisal is the immediate way of assessing the problem
What is a physiological response?
the physiological response is a flight or fight response
- SAM
- HPA
What is the Sympathetic Adreno-Medullary System (SAM)?
this is the immediate response, which is the activation of your sympathetic neurons that are located mid-way down your spine, this then activates the adrenal glands, and leads to the production or norepinephrine and epinephrine
What does the production or norepinephrine and epinephrine cause your body to do?
the production of these hormones result in a change of blood flow (heart rate) as your body is trying to prepare for the response
What is the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenocortical System (HPA)?
this is a longer-term process and is the production of cortisol, the anterior pituitary gland in your brain is activated which then a signal to adrenal glands to produce cortisol
What is the short- and long-term effects of cortisol?
short term = increase immune function
long term = build up over time
humans are not designed to endure stress over a long time, this is a modern feeling, so cortisol is building up and can become dangerous
What is the problem-solving coping strategy?
this is when you would find methods to change the impact of the stressor
What is the avoidance coping strategy?
this is when you would do something that takes your mind out of the space and think about or do something completely different
What is the emotion-focused coping strategy?
this is finding a blame, overthinking the problem and feeling hopeless about the situation
What is the social-support coping strategy?
this is using the people around you to help with your stress
- appraisal support
- belonging support
- tangible support
What is apprasial support?
this is being with someone who has good advice and can help solve the problem
What is belonging support?
this is simply just being around others and having a sense of community
