What is a physiological response?
the physiological response is a flight or fight response
- SAM

What is the Sympathetic Adreno-Medullary System (SAM)?
this is the immediate response, which is the activation of your sympathetic neurons that are located mid-way down your spine, this then activates the adrenal glands, and leads to the production or norepinephrine and epinephrine
What does the production or norepinephrine and epinephrine cause your body to do?
the production of these hormones result in a change of blood flow (heart rate) as your body is trying to prepare for the response
What is the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenocortical System (HPA)?
this is a longer-term process and is the production of cortisol, the anterior pituitary gland in your brain is activated which then a signal to adrenal glands to produce cortisol
What is the short- and long-term effects of cortisol?
short term = increase immune function
long term = build up over time
humans are not designed to endure stress over a long time, this is a modern feeling, so cortisol is building up and can become dangerous
