lecture 2 - lipids Flashcards
What are two properties of lipids?
- insoluble in water
- soluble in non - polar solvents such as chloroform, hydrocarbons and benzene
what are the 3 functions of lipids?
- energy storage
membrane structure - hormones and signalling
What is the difference in complex vs simple lipids?
simple lipids Coe from one or two components
Which lipid type is more common in nature?
complex lipids
Which type of lipid is more complex
simple lipids , have many specific functions
What is a typical feature of a fatty acid chain?
- Has a carboxyl group which has a pka of 4.5.
- Therefore can be ionised at most pHs
What is the most common double bond structure in fatty acids?
cis bonds
What does the cis double bond do?
forms a kink in the chain
What does ‘oate’ on the end of name signify?
its in an ionised form
What are fatty acids termed
‘oic acid’ or ‘oate’
What are triacyl glycerols?
3 fatty acid groups linked to one glycerol molecule
What lipid is the main store of energy?
triacyl glycerols
What does double bonds in a fatty acid tail do?
Means the lipid is an liquid at room temperature, this is due to the fact the molecules can not get close together
What effect does chain length have on melting temperature?
longer chain = more interaction more solid
What does amphipathic molecules mean?
Have both a hydrophilic part and hydrophobic part
Are Triacylglycerols amphipathic?
no - they are neutral
