Electron transport chain lecture 1 Flashcards
What is oxidative phosphorylation?
The final step in the non-photosynthetic , energy conversion pathway .
It can catabolic carbon - based files to 02 and generate H2O and ATP
Why are some meats darker than others?
Dark meats have a high mitochondria content. the mitochondria are loaded with cytochromes and therefore have a darker colour
Who and when was the chemiosmotic theory discovered?
Peter Mitchell (and Bob Williams) in 1961
What is chemiosmosis?
movement of Hydrogen ins down the concentration gradient
What is different about chemiosmosis in plants?
The proton flow is reversed
What does the P vs N side mean?
P side = postive side that gains electrons
N side is the opposite
What do uncoupling proteins do?
- protons flow through these proteins instead of ATP synthase
- energy converted to heat rather than ATP synthesis
What are blockers?
- The protein is flow is blocked
- An example is oligomycin which is an antibiotic which blocks the flow of protons through ATP synthase
Where is an example in nature where uncoupling is seen?
Hibernating bears
- Proton gradient used instead to create heat to keep the bear warm
What is a weight loss pill that uses uncoupling?
2,4 - Dinitrophenol works in the same way to the hibernating bear
Who was Peter Mitchell ?
proposed the chemiosmotic theory of ATP synthesis through work conducted largely at his private laboratory at the Glynn Research Institute.
Who was Bob Williams?
research scientist too , discovered the chemiosmotic theory too but didn’t get any credit from Peter Mitchell
Who provided the experimental evidence for the chemiosomotic theory?
Efraim Racker and Walter Stoeckenius, 1973:
