Lecture 2 - Cells 2 Flashcards
How do you recognise Eosinophil?
Red Acidic Stain binds Basic cell
Name the 5 main white blood cells.
Eosinophil Neutrophil Basophil Monocyte Lymphocyte
How do you recognise Basophils?
Blue Basic stain binds acidic cell
How do you recognise Neutrophil?
Polymorphonuclear Leukocyte
There are many nuclei within the cell
How do you recognise monocytes?
Mononuclear phagocyte (one nucleus) Precursor of macrophages
How do you recognise Lymphocytes?
They are vertebrates.
They are found mostly in Lymph nodes.
It is the main cell of adaptive immunity.
What are Granulocytes?
Neutrocytes
Eosinophils
Basophils (Mast cells in tissue)
What do Granulocytes do?
These cells engulf microbes and degrade them using powerful enzymes.
What are Phagocytes?
Neutrophils
Monocytes/Macrophages
What do Phagocytes do?
Phagocytes engulf bacteria by reorganising there ACTIN CYTOSKELETON around the bacteria, forming a CUP, internalising the bacteria and digesting them.
What do Lymphocytes do?
They are activated by antigens from foreign materials, and create antibodies (taking part in adaptive immunity)
What does Eosinophils do?
When bound to a Parasite, it releases a toxic protein that can also damage your lungs (asthma)
What do Basophils/Mast cells do?
Contact with PARASITES or ALLERGENS causes the release of GRANULES such as CYTOKINES which expel the parasites/allergens but also causes ALLERGY symptoms.
What happens if you have too little white blood cells?
Leukaemia
What are Erythrocytes?
Red blood cells
