Day 6 - 29/09/14 Flashcards
What is the compliment system?
A BIOCHEMICAL CASCADE that occurs in all vertebrates that clears pathogens.
What is innate immunity?
Innate immunity is NON-SPECIFIC immunity and is the FIRST LINE OF DEFENCE.
How does the complimentary system work?
- INACTIVE plasma PROTEINS are ACTIVATED at bacterial SURFACE
- The PROTEINS INITIATE a sequential ENZYME CASCADE
- Enzymes LYSE pathogen cell membranes.
- Enzymes regulate inflammation by
- chemotaxis (movement in response to chemicals)
- microbial opsonisation (marked for ingestion by phagocytes)
What does a deficiency in the complimentary system result in?
Recurrent infections.
Name some pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPS) and there corresponding pattern recognising receptors.
Bacterial lipoprotein - TLR1
Peptidoglycan - TLR2
dsRNA - TLR3
LPS - TLR4
How does adaptive immunity work with innate immunity?
The antibodies created by lymphocytes (adaptive immunity) Enhance the effectiveness of the -complement cells -phagocytes (Innate immunity)
Define symptoms of inflammation.
Local Redness, heat, pain, swelling
Define Inflammation.
An example of immune response in action to injury.
What are the two types of inflammation?
Chronic inflammation
Acute inflammation
What causes chronic inflammation?
Persistence of causative agent
eg. Inert particles/ self tissue in auto immunity
What causes acute inflammation?
Infection or Injury.
