Day 8 - 01/10/14 Flashcards
MHCs have APCs,
What are APCs?
Antigen Presenting Cells.
What does MHC stand for?
Major Histocompatibility Complex
What does TCR stand for?
T-Cell antigen Receptors
How does TCR communicate with MHC?
TCR detects PEPTIDES of FOREIGN PROTEINS bound to MHC on the cell surface of APCs.
What 3 main qualities does MHC have?
Determines
- Susceptibility to disease.
- Development of Autoimmunity
- Pathology associated with transplantation.
What does POLYGENIC mean in context of MHC.
There are lots of MHC Class 1+2 genes in each Individual.
What does POLYMORPHIC mean in context of MHC.
Alleles of MHC Class 1+2 genes have evolved within populations.
Give Examples of Class 1 molecules.
K
D
L
Give examples of Class 2 molecules.
IA
IE
What does Class 1 molecule look like?
ALPHA-CHAIN encoded within MHC locus with a BETA2-MICROGLOBULIN NOT encoded.
What does Class 2 molecule look like?
ALPHA CHAINS & BETA CHAINS,
Both encoded at MHC locus.
What common feature does CLASS 1&2 molecules have?
OUTER EXTRACELLULAR DOMAIN has a GROOVE.
What function does the Groove have?
It’s where the FOREIGN PEPTIDES are trapped during SYNTHESIS/TRACKING of MHC molecules.
What is the Groove made up of?
Floor - 8 Beta Sheets
Sides - 2 Alpha Helixes
What function does the BETA SHEET FLOOR have?
Site of PEPTIDE BINDING.
