what are the accessory structures of the skin?
A
hair, sweat glands, receptors, nails

what is hair made of? what does it consist of?
A
- made of keratinized dead cells produced inside hair follcile
- the hair shaft projects from follcile
it consists of:
arrector pili muscle
- contraction produces goosebumps and insulation
root hair plexus
- collection of sensory nerves on base of each hair follicle
- heightens sensation

what do eccrine sweat glands do?
A
- found in most parts of skin
- secretes watery secretions on skin surface
- important for thermoregulation and secretion
- some antibacterial action

what do apocrine glands do?
A
- found in armpit, groin and around nipple
- sticky, oily, odorous secretions into base of hair follicle
- influenced by hormones e.g. breastmilk

how does smoking affect skin aging?
A
- tobacco smoke causes premature skin aging
- contains agents that accelerates aging
- damages collagen and elastin
- linked with poor wound healing, acne, skin + oral cancers

how does vaping affect skin aging?
A
- contains nicotine
- nicotine reduces blood circulation in dermis
- contact dermatitis due to metal coating on e-cigarettes

how does tattoo influence lymph nodes?
A
tattoo ink can pigment that lymph nodes and can sometimes look like melanoma

pain during tattoo is due to the dermal layer containing pain receptors and free nerve endings
