Lecture 1: Anatomy of the skin Part 1 Flashcards
1
Q
what do desmosomes do?
A
anchor neighbouring cells in the epidermis
2
Q
what do hemidesmosomes do?
A
anchors stratum basale to the dermis
3
Q
what are the 2 layers of the dermis?
A
- papillary layer
- reticular layer
4
Q
features of the papillary layer?
A
consists of highly vascularised tissues for nourishment
5
Q
features of reticular layer?
A
mesh-like structure of collagen and elastin fibres for strength
6
Q
what do both the papillary and reticular layer have?
A
both layers contain blood vessels, lymphatics, sensory nerve fibres and accessory structures
7
Q
are the the plexuses of the dermis?
A
- cutaneous plexus
- subpapillary plexus
8
Q
what is the cutaneous plexus?
A
- network of blood vessels present at the junction of the dermis/hypodermis
- supplies the hypodermis, deeper dermis, including capillaries for hair follicles and sweat glands
9
Q
what is the subpapillary plexus?
A
- branches from the cutaneous plexus
- lies deep in the papillary layer of the dermis
- network of blood vessels providing O2 and nutrients to upper dermis and epidermis
