Lecture 2 Flashcards
What is distal stimulus?
Its the real object
What is proximal stimulus?
The energies that reach us from the distal object
Psychophysics
The study of the relationship between the physical stimulus and the psychological sensory experience
What is difference threshold?
The smalles stimulus change that the observer can reliably detect. Measured in JND”s
What is Weber’s law?
The law states that the change in a stimulus that will be just noticeable is a constant ratio of the original stimulus
What is visual periphery?
It is your side vision. It has lots of rods and can see dim lights
What is Fovea?
The fovea has lots of cones with greatest acuity, thats why we point our eyes to the target.
What is the duplex theory if vision?
concerned with the light level and dual retinal function and refers only to the rod and cone photoreceptor cell systems.
What do rods have?
They can see light and have a short wavelengths
What do cones have?
Can see color and acuity and have long wavelengths.
Trichromatic theory (Young-Helmholtz)
within your eye are tiny cells that can receive waves of light and translate them into one of three colors: blue, green, and red
Opponent-process theory (Hurvich&Jameson)
Colors come in three opponent process pairs: Red-Green, Blue-Yellow, Black-white. Excitation of one member of the pair inhibits the other member.
