lecture 19 - gut acid Flashcards
What cells in the stomach secrete acid?
Parietal cells
How is the stomach epithelium protected against the low pH of the chyme?
Mucus containing HCO3- is secreted and covers the epithelium, neutralising acid that comes into contacy
What type of chemicals are antacids?
Metal salts - neutralise acids
What is the consequence of overdose of antacids?
Issues with reduced water absorption in the intestines (laxative effect)
Why are proton-pump inhibitors administered as enteric coated tablets?
PPIs are activated by acid, but if they are activated as they hit the stomach they will be ineffective. They must reach the systemic circulation first, which means they must have a coating to prevent breakdown in the stomach
What is a key example of a proton pump inhibitor?
Omeprazole
What is the most commonly used gastric mucosal strengthener (prostaglandin analogue)?
Misoprostol (not on core drug list)
What class of antihistamine is used to reduce gastric acid secretion?
H2 receptor antagonists
