lecture 11 - diuretics Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 4 key types of diuretics?
A
Osmotic, loop, thiazide, K+ sparing
2
Q
What is the action of diuretics?
A
Remove excess extracellular fluid and electrolytes via the renal system
3
Q
What is the common example of a loop diuretic?
A
Frusemide
4
Q
What is the mechanism of action of loop diuretics?
A
They inhibit Na/Cl/K cotransporters in the thick ascending loop of nephrons, blocking their reabsorption, and allowing water to be excreted downstream.
5
Q
What are the indications for loop diuretics, such as furosemide?
A
Hypertension, oedema
6
Q
What are the adverse effects of loop diuretics, such as frusemide?
A
hypovolemia (dizziness, syncope), Na+ and K+ loss, hyperuricaemia
