lecture 18 - gut motility Flashcards
What are bulk laxatives?
Polysaccharide polymers that are non-absorbable in the gut
What are osmotic laxatives?
Usually metal salts that aid water retention in the gut by making it osmotically difficult for the gut to absorb water
What are stimulant laxatives?
Drugs that stimulate accumulation of water ad electrolytes by interacting with the enteric plexus to induce contractions, or by inhibiting intestinal cotransporters
What are prokinetic drugs?
Drugs that antagonise dopamine receptors, increasing gastric emptying
What are some of the types of anti-motility drugs?
Opioids, anti-cholinergics
How do D2 receptor antagonists have an anti-emetic effect?
They block dopamine receptor activation in the chemoreceptor trigger zone in the brain stem
How do H1 receptor antagonists have an anti-emetic effect?
They block H1 receptor activation in the vomiting zone in the brain
