Lecture 18 - Topographic Maps Part 2 Flashcards
contour lines
enable us to identify a wide variety of landscape features
valley
low-lying land bordered by higher ground
hill
rounded elevation of land
what region is montreal in and what is special about it
the Saint Lawrence Lowlands physiographic region on Canada
- these lowlands are bordered by higher elevations — the canadian shield and the appalachian region
- adamo lives in the chateauguay river valley with the appalachian mountains immediately to the south
ridge
linear or elongate elevation or crest of land
spur
short ridge or branch coming off a main ridge
saddle
low point in a ridge or line of hills (literally think horse saddle)
gully
a ravine, trench or deep channel formed on land by the action of water
closed depression
low point/area from which water cannot drain, lower than surrounding area, look for contour lines with hachure marks
what is a karst landform
a geological feature on earths surface caused by drainage of water into the ground
steep slope
closely spaced contour lines
gentle slope
widely-spaced contour lines
distance between ____ indicates whether you have a steep or gentle slope
contour lines
vertical cliff
merged contour lines
ex: Mount Thor (Nunavut, Canada)
earths greatest vertical drop
what is earths greatest vertical drop
Mount Thor (Nunavut, Canada)
overhanging cliff
crossing contour lines; look for dashed contour line that crosses a solid one — dashed line indicates what is under the overhanging cliff
- if you have overhanging cliff; contour lines cross each other
what is the teachers favourite mountain peak
