Lecture 18 - Mechanisms of Pathogenesis Flashcards
What is viral pathogenesis?
refers to the adverse physiological consequences that occur as a result of viral infection of a host organism
What are cytopathic viruses?
viral infections that kill the cell rapidly, producing a burst of new virions
What are noncytopathic viruses?
viral infections that release virions without causing immediate host cell death | disease is usually a consequence of the immune response
What are 3 cytopathic effects?
apoptosis, pyroptosis, necrosis
What is pyroptosis?
highly inflammatory apoptosis occurs most frequently upon infection with intracellular pathogens
What is necrosis (cell death)?
apoptosis due to external factors such as injury or bacterial infection
