Lecture 18- Equilibrium 1 Flashcards
1
Q
Completion reaction
A
- Some reactions go to completion
- All of the reactants are used up, as they all turn into products
2
Q
Dynamic equilibrium
A
- Most reactions do not go to completion
- All of the reactants do not get used up
- The system reaches a dynamic state where reactants are continually turning into products, and products are continually turning back into reactants
- 2 way arrow
3
Q
Chemical equilibrium
A
- Forward and reverse reactions continue to take place
- The rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction
- Concentrations of all species remain constant, yet will rarely be equal to one another
- Takes place in a closed system
4
Q
Keq
A
- Products/reactants
- [In brackets]
- coefficients are powers
- include gases and aqueous
- take out liquids and solids
5
Q
Kp
A
- Pressure constant
- Products/reactants
- (In parenthesis)
- coefficients are powers
6
Q
Partial pressure
A
- The partial pressure of a gas in a system is the pressure exerted by that specific gas
- The partial pressure of all the gases in the system sum up to the total pressure in that system
- 1 mole of one type of gas will exert the same pressure as 1 mole of a different type of gas, under the same conditions of volume and temperature
- 2 moles of gas will exert twice as much pressure
7
Q
Conversions between Kc and Kp
A
Kp=Kc(RT)^n
- R=0.0821 Latm/mol K
- T= temperature in Kelvin
- n= moles of products - moles or reactants
- Given Kc asked to find Kp or vice versa
8
Q
What Keq tells us
A
- Keq > 10 = mostly products, equilibrium to the right
- Keq
9
Q
ICE
A
- Put in values
- Solve for x
