Lecture 17: Prejudice and Sterotyping Flashcards
white names are more likely to get interviewed than black names (is this a measure of qualifications)
white applicants get more calls than black applicants
for white applicants, high quality applicants are more likely to get an interview
for black applicants, it doesn’t matter if your applicant is high or low quality
catheter procedure (expensive and time consuming) (randomize black/white or man/woman) outcomes
Black women are less likely to be referred for this procedure than any other group of people
childhood medication (black/white kids) (mild vs severe pain)
mild pain: black kids less likely to get pain medication
severe pain: both groups are more likely to get medication BUT
black kids getting advil, white kids getting opioids
stop and frisk (black/hispanic men and who actually has a gun)
black/hispanic men more disporopinatley targeting but white men more likely to have a gun
mug shots (how punitive are policies depending on who is affected (white or black))
People will be more likely to support harsh, punitive policies if those
people subjected to those policies are Black people
death penalty (black men killing black people vs black men convicted of white people)
Rate a face: do they look more or less stereotypically black?
If black person killed white and they look more stereotypically black,
they are more likely to get the death penalty
If black person killed black person, however they look doesn’t have
an impact
is prejudicial thought automated or controlled?
it’s both!
widespread automatic bias but selective attempts at suppression
iat results (female)
female = positive
iat correlations? with attitudes + behaviors
small to moderate correlation w explicit attitudes + behaviors
iat association test with fmri scanner
either consciously or unconsciously see a black or white face
outcomes
white participants amygdala (fear) responses for subliminal black face correlated with their IAT score
amygdala strongest for SUBLIMINAL presentation
Interpretation: when you become aware of the face, you use
strong implicit but weak explicit
cognitive control to suppress your feelings of fear
- Dlpfc (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex <- cognitive control) <- activated
when thinking about explicit attitudes
how are iat changing overtime
implicit racial bias has improved but nowhere near 0
same with sexuality (gay people)
body weight implicit hasn’t changed
explicit has gotten better about body weight
Minimal Group Paradigm (painting example)
what is the thinnest amount of evidence that you need to decide in-group v out-group
if you like same painting, more likely to get equal profit
outgroup member, more likely to take a personal hit if that means out group member will get less than you
why are we so prejudiced ?
political & idealogical motives
system justification
cognitive errors that produce vicious cycles
Race v Coalition Adults (when do we default to similarites and when do we default to race?)
when things are ambiguous, we defer to race as a proxy for social structure/proxy
when we have good coalition information, we use that to infer social structure (default to jerseys)
race v language (when do we default to language vs race)
if little white kid has a toy from same accent w black or white adult, white kid gets white adult
if little white kids has a white person with weird accent vs black person with normal accent… white kid chooses black person
