Lecture 17 Flashcards
State the 4 boundaries of the temporal floor and its 3 “contents”.
Temporal floor: Greater wing of Sphenoid Squamous temporal Frontal Parietal
Contents:
Temporalis Muscle
Deep temporal nerve and arteries
Zygomaticofacial Nerve
What branch of what nerve innervates all of the muscles of mastication?
Mandibular branch of CN V (Trigeminal)
Which ligament runs from the base of the zygomatic process to the mandibular neck? Which ligament runs between the parotid and submandibular glands?
Temporomandibular Ligament:runs from the base of the zygomatic process to the mandibular neck
Stylomandibular Ligament: runs between the parotid and submandibular glands
Which ligament is a remnant of Meckel’s cartilage?
Sphenomandibular ligament
The maxillary artery is divided into 3 parts by what structure? Describe the arrangement of these 2 structures.
The maxillary artery is divided into 3 parts by the lateral pterygoid muscle
The maxillary artery may pass deep OR superficial to the lateral pterygoid muscle
Which maxillary artery branch lies within the parotid gland and supplies the TMJ, external auditory meatus?
Deep auricular branch.
Which maxillary artery branch supplies the tympanic cavity/inner surface of the tympanic membrane and which maxillary artery branch supplies the outer surface of the tympanic membrane?
Anterior Tympanic artery supplies the inner surface of the tympanic membrane/tympanic cavity
Deep Auricular artery supplies the outer surface of the tympanic membrane
What cranial cavities do the middle meningeal and accessory meningeal arteries pass through? What do they both supply?
Middle meningeal: passes through the foramen spinosum
Supplies the skull and dura mater
Accessory meningeal: passes through the foramen ovale
Supplies the semilunar ganglion (V) and the dura mater
State what the 3 parts of the maxillary artery supply (for 1st part state the foramen it enters and the artery it becomes)(give an important branch of the 2nd part)(what nerve does the 3rd part run with?)
1st part supplies lower teeth and gums
Enters the mandibular foramen and becomes the mental artery after passing through the mental foramen
2nd part supplies the muscles of mastication
Buccal artery is one of it’s branches
3rd part supplies the upper molars and premolars
Runs with the superior alveolar nerve (V2)
What part of the maxillary artery is the infraorbital artery a branch of? what branches does the infraorbital artery give off? What does the infraorbital artery supply (sort of a general area of structures)?
The infraorbital artery is a branch off the the 3rd part of the maxillary artery the gives rise to the anterior and middle superior alveolar arteries
The Infraorbital artery supplies the lower eyelid, side of nose, upper lip, and oral mucosa
What nerve does the infraorbital artery run with? how does it enter the orbit?
The infraorbital artery runs with the infraorbital nerve
It enters the orbit via the inferior orbital fissure
Describe the articulations of the TMJ
Articulation occurs on the intervening fibrocartilage disc that lies between the condyloid process of the mandible and the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone
