Lecture 17 Flashcards
Define Need
A physiochemical force in the brain that organizes perception, thought, and behavior to transform an unsatisfying situation into a satisfying one.
Define Motive
Elicited by a need, direct thoughts and behavior toward or away from objects, people, and goals
Define Environmental Press
A situational factor that increases or decreases a motive, and consequently, influences thought and behavior
Distinguish between implicit and explicit needs
Explicit needs/Self-attributed needs are consciously expressed needs, where as implicit are unconscious
What is the thematic apperception test
Most common assessment of needs. A projective test where participants tell stories about ambiguous images; used to assess implicit needs.
What is the Personality Research Form
A self-report, true/false questionnaire assessing explicit needs across 22 categories.
What is the Multi-Motive Grid
Combines projective imagery with self-report T/F questions; assesses 3 needs: achievement, affiliation, and power.
What are criticisms of Thematic Apperception Test
Low inter-rater reliability, poor internal consistency (inconsistent dominant themes across images).
What are criticisms of Personality Research Form
Cannot assess implicit needs; lacks access to unconscious drivers of behavior.
What are criticisms of the Multi-Motive Grid
It only assesses 3 needs and may not capture the full spectrum of dominant needs.
