- Learning through observation
- Imitation of actions
- Mirroring of physical manifestation of emotions (e.g facial expressions)
- Inferring the intentions, desires, and beliefs of others (aka Theory of Mind)
What is the Mirror Neuron System (MNS)?
Action observation network, action identification network and action representation network
What is the Default Mode Network (DMN)?
The task-negative network because it is deactivated during performance of tasks
What is Theory of Mind?
Thinking about the thoughts of others and what they might or might not know
What is Autobiographical Information?
Memories of collection of events and facts about one’s self

What is Story Comprehension?
Understanding and remembering a narrative
What is Imitative Learning?
Monkey see, monkey do (aka see one, do one, teach one)
What is Gestural Perception?
Face recognition, facial action recognition, feature recognition, speech/language
What is Social Perception?
Theory of Mind (TOM), empathy, sympathy, compassion
Communication with conspecifics
What is First-Theory of Mind?
The ability to predict the thoughts of another person

What is Perceptual Theory of Mind?
Perceiving social cues that predict the intentions of others
What is Motivational Theory of Mind?
Perceiving the desires and intentions of others
What is the Sally-Anne Task?
A theory of mind test:
- Sally puts her ball in the basket and leaves the room
- Anne takes Sally’s ball out of the basket and puts it in the box
- Sally comes back into the room
- Where will Sally look for the ball
- Children under age 5 cannot solve this task
What other Brain Regions Support the Theory of Mind?
- Media Prefrontal Cortex
- Precuneus
- Posterior Cingulate Cortex
- Temporoparietal
