Lecture 15 Flashcards
Fitness
A function of both survival and reproductive success
Maladapted trait
A trait that has become more harmful than helpful
Primary vs secondary sexual characteristic
primary sex characteristics are those that are developed and present at birth (may include sexual organs such as the penis, testes, uterus, and ovaries) whereas secondary sex characteristics are those that develop as an organism enters puberty or sexual maturity
Inter vs intrasexual selection
Intersexual selection occurs when one sex chooses which members of the opposite sex to mate with, while intrasexual selection occurs when members of the same sex compete for mates
Mate choice
any pattern of behavior shown by members of one sex that leads to preferred mating with certain members of the opposite sex
Coevolution
Small number of traits/genes in one species are directly impacting the evolution of a second suite of traits/genes in another species
Symbiosis vs mutualism vs parasitism
Symbiosis is a close and prolonged interaction between organisms of different species
Mutualism is interactions between two different species mutually benefit each other
Parasitism is the interaction between two different species where one benefits at the expense of the other
