Lecture 14 Flashcards
Adaptive
Having the ability or tendency to adapt to different situations
Radiation
energy that comes from a source and travels through space at the speed of light
Ecological niche
The specific place a species holds in its biotic and abiotic environment (ex: the physical space where it feeds/reproduces etc, the role it plays in the food chain of its community, and its interactions with other organisms)
*no 2 species can hold exactly the same niche in the same environment, one outcompetes the other
Convergent evolution
occurs when organisms that aren’t closely related evolve similar features or behaviours, often as solutions to the same problems
Mimicry
phenomenon characterized by the superficial resemblance of two or more organisms that are not closely related taxonomically
Parallel evolution
a process in which two distinct species develop similar traits independently while living in the same habitat due to similar environmental pressures
Founder effect
the reduction in genomic variability that occurs when a small group of individuals becomes separated from a larger population
Founder mutation
A genetic alteration observed with high frequency in a group that is or was geographically or culturally isolated, in which one or more of the ancestors was a carrier of the altered gene
