Lecture 14 Flashcards
Define wound
Any defect or damage in the skin caused by physical, chemical or thermal factors
Name the two classifications of wounds
Wounds without tissue loss (surgery), wounds with tissue lost (burn wounds, wounds caused by trauma)
Define incisions
Regular wound, caused by a clean sharp edged object
Define lacerations
Rough irregular wounds, caused by crushing or ripping forces
Define abrasions (grazes)
Superficial wound only the top layer of the skin scrapped off, caused by sliding fall onto a rough surface
Define puncture wounds
Caused by a sharp pointed object punching the skin (nail, needle) high risk of anaerobic infection, injury of big vessels and nerves
Define penetration wounds
Caused by a knife entering the body
Define avulsion wounds
When the integrity of any tissue is compromised
Where contusions (bruise)
Caused by a blunt force trauma and damaged tissues under the skin
Define hematoma
Caused by damage to a blood vessel, blood accumulation under the skin
Define crushing injuries
Caused by a blunt force, pressure injury over a period of time
Name the three wound healing phases
Inflammatory, proliferation and remodelling phase
Define the inflammatory phase
Prepares the area of injury for healing
Define proliferation phase
Involves proliferation of epidermal cells at wound margin behind actively migrating cells
Define angiogenesis
Production of capillaries
