Lecture 10 Flashcards
Name red flag symptoms for eyes
Photophobia, clouding of cornea, foreign body, irregular shoes pupil, distortion of vision, contact lenses
Name symptoms for same day referral
True eye pain, loss of vision, vomiting, limbal redness only
Define dry eye syndrome
Problem with tear film which usually keeps the eye moist and lubricated, lack of tear production, deceased evaporation of tears
Define vaporative dry eye
Occurs when the meibomian glands fail to secrete enough oil substance to maintain the lipid layer of the tear film
What is vaportative eye caused by?
Contact lense wear, meibomian gland dysfunction, allergic conjunctivitis, low blink rate
Define aqueous deficient dry eye
Occurs when the lacrimal glands fail to produce enough fluid and proteins to maintain the aqueous layer of the tear film
What causes aqueous deficient dry eye?
Lacrimal gland deficiency/obstruction, systemic drugs , Sjögren’s syndrome
Name the tests used for diagnosis
Fluorescein dye test, schimers test, tear break up time, observation
Define Sjögren’s syndrome
Autoimmune disease that damages mucosal glands e.g. salivary and lacrimal glands with lymphocytic infiltration/ connective tissue disorders
Associated symptoms with dry eye
Conjunctivitis, Sjögren’s syndrome, filamentary keratitis, infectious diseases, corneal damage
Define filamentary keratitis
Strands composed of degenerated epithelial cells and mucus develop on and adhere to the corneal surface causing pain and foreign body sensation
Examples of infectious diseases associated with dry eyes
Chlamydia, here’s simplex, herpes zoster
Examples of corneal damage
Abrasion, erosion, foreign body, mucous plaques
Define meibomianitis
Inflammation of the meibomian glands, a group of oil secreting glands in the eyelids
Define punctal plugs
Tiny biocompatible devices inserted into the tear ducts to block drainage and increase tear film volume
