Lecture 13 - Mitosis Flashcards
How are karyotypes made?
- Take blood sample
- Treat cells with mitogen
- Then colchicine
Which domain of life do protists belong to?
Eurkarya
What do multicellular organisms depend on cell division for?
- development from a fertilized cell.
- growth to adult (10^14 cells).
- repair.
The longest part of the cell cycle is:
(A) the G1 phase.
(B) interphase.
(C) mitosis.
(D) prophase.
(B) interphase.
Each sister chromatid in mitosis contains:
(A) 2 single-stranded copies of their DNA molecule.
(B) 2 double-stranded copies of their DNA molecule.
(C) 1 single-stranded copy of their DNA molecule.
(D) 1 double-stranded copy of their DNA molecule.
(D) 1 double-stranded copy of their DNA molecule.
What is a duplicated chromosome?
Two sister chromatids
What are the phases of Mitosis? (5)
- Prophase
- Prometaphase
- Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
When do sister chromatids separate?
Anaphase
What are the phases of interphase?
G1 phase, S phase and G2 phase
What happens during Prophase of Mitosis?
Chromosomes condense in the nucleus, centrosomes separate and form early miotic spindle (microtubules) between them
What happens during Prometaphase of Mitosis?
Asters are now opposing each other in cell (north and south pole), chromosomes attach to microtubules on mitotic spindle (kinetochore microtubules) via kinetochore
What happens during Metaphase of Mitosis?
Centromeres of chromosomes line up on metaphase plate
What happens during Anaphase of Mitosis?
Non kinetochore microtubules lengthen. Kinetochore microtubules shorten ripping the chromosomes apart at the centromere forming daughter singular chromosomes. The daughter chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell
What happens during Telophase of Mitosis?
Cleavage furrow form in between
During mitotic anaphase:
A. the daughter chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell.
B. the non-kinetochore microtubules shorten.
C. the kinetochore microtubules lengthen.
D. all of the above.
A. the daughter chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell.
The non-kinetochore microtubules LENGTHEN while the kinetochore microtubules SHORTEN
