What is consequentialism?
Consequences detemine ethical value
What is utilitarianism?
Greatest good for greatest number of people
What is the trolley problem?
Train will kill 5 people, but you can pull a lever and kill only 1 person. What will you do?
Most people don’t like to be psychologically involved
What 2 philosophical ideas are involved in the trolley problem?
Consequentialism + utilitarianism
What is the categorical imperative from Immanuel Kant? Which philosophical area is associated with it?
Acting only according to that rule whereby you know that it’s good if all people would do that all the time (universal rule)
Deontology
What is deontology?
The ethical theory that uses rules to distinguish right from wrong
What is culpa in causa? Give an example
The origins of reasons of some action bare blame
E.g. if one starts drinking, they have to accept later consequences of later troubles
Which 2 ways of thinking are included in the code of ethics?
Deontology (rules) and consequentialist
What do you have to do when the code of ethics is contradictory in a specific case?
Consult with your peers, precede with caution and weigh your actions very carefully
What are 4 aspects of taking responsibility in applying psychological knowledge?
- Don’t end up unintentionally mixing roles
- Don’t make statements about other people’s mental status
- Be mindful of not harming the profession
- Don’t overestimate how much you know
