Lecture 13: Amphibian Video Flashcards
March 11
Where must amphibians lay eggs?
Extremely moist environments or water.
Can amphibians move away from water?
No.
Amniotes can.
What happens if an amniotic egg is laid in water?
It will drown.
What are the three groups of amphibians?
Frogs (incl. toads), salamanders, and caecilians.
What are the 9 key attributes of amphibians?
Cutaneous respiration
Lungs
Lack true ribs (do not enclose chest cavity)
Ear adaptation for low frequency
Eye adaptation for night vision
Pedicellate teeth
External or internal fertilization
Water-laid eggs
Larval stage
How do frogs, salamanders, and caecilians fertilize eggs?
Frog: Mostly external, some internal
Salamander: Internal (sperm packets)
Caecilian: Internal
How is global climate change a threat to amphibians?
Increasing temperatures are a challenge since amphibians are ectothermic. As external temps increase, their metabolism increases, their need for food increases.
What is the trade off toads make with having thicker skin?
Can withstand drier environments.
Decreases cutaneous respiration.
What are the ONLY endothermic lifeforms?
Mammals and birds.
EVERYTHING else is ectothermic.
One group of salamanders has lost lungs completely. How can they survive and what replaced the lung area in their body cavity?
Cutaneous respiration.
Musculature and skeletal structure to project their tongues out.
Do frogs have projectile tongues?
No. It folds out and is sticky. It unfolds from the roof of the mouth.
