Lab Quiz One: Protochordates to Lamprey Flashcards
Week two and three labs
Amphioxus
Lancelet.
Cephalochordata.
Rostrum
Snout projection.
(Cephalochordata).
Buccal (oral) cirri
Filament-like appendages surrounding the mouth. Forms a sieve for filter feeding.
(Cephalochordata).
Myomeres
Muscle segments arranged in a series along the body.
Notochord
Dorsal midline structure that provides support and signals nervous and skeletal development. Made of cartilage.
Dorsal hollow nerve cord.
Hollow tube of nervous tissue running down dorsal midline. Derives from ectoderm.
Wheel Organ
Specialized structure in the mouth of a lancelet that helps clean the mouth by creating a vortex of water
(Cephalochordata).
Pharynx.
Canal immediately behind the mouth and before the esophagus.
Gill bars
Bars separating the pharyngeal gill slits.
Phylum Chordata has…
- DHNC
- Notochord
- Muscular post anal tail
- Pharyngeal gill slits
ALL AT ONCE
Non-chordate deuterostomes
Echinodermata
Hemichordata
What kind of circulatory system does Echinodermata have?
Open
What is the body symmetry of Echinodermata?
Radial
That does the Echinodermata nervous system have?
Nerve nets.
Peripheral ganglia.
Does Echinodermata have a tri-partite brain?
No.
Does Echinodermata have any of the chordate characteristics?
No.
What does Hemichordata mean? Why do they have this name?
Half-chordate. Have pharyngeal gill slits and a short DHNC.
What are the Hemicordate body regions?
- Proboscis
- Collar
- Trunk
What type of circulatory system do Hemichordates have?
Open.
What subphylums make up Protochordates?
- Urochordata (sea squirts, tunicates)
- Cephalochordata (lancelet)
Describe Urochordata.
- Marine filter feeders (endostyle to trap food).
- MOTILE larvae with all chordate characteristics.
- Sessile adults lack chordate characteristics, but gill slits are retained.
Describe Cephalochordata.
- Segmented muscles.
- Filter feeders (sensory hood with buccal cirri).
- Retain all four chordate characteristics into adulthood.
Not vertebrates yet!
Describe Craniata.
Possess a DISTINCT MINERALIZED SKULL.
Not all vertebrates. Have chordata characteristics. Have neural crest.
In what clade does the first duplication of HOX genes occur?
Craniata.
