What does the term ‘shock’ describe?

A

Acute circulatory failure with either inadequate or inappropriately distributed tissue perfusion resulting in general lack of oxygen supply to cells.

What is cardiogenic shock?

A

Inability of the heart to eject enough blood.

Due to ischaemic cardiac damage/arrhythmias.

A

Restriction on filling of heart.
Due to cardiac tamponade.
Obstruction to blood flow through lungs.
Due to pulmonary embolism.

A

Loss of circulating fluid volume.

Due to haemorrhage.

A

Uncontrolled fall in peripheral resistance.

Due to dramatic drop in arterial pressure/sepsis/anaphylaxis
