Lecture 12: Lymphatic system Flashcards
What happens to blood plasma
is filtered from blood capillaries into interstitial spaces to become interstitial fluid
what’s the role of the lymphatic capillaries
absorb interstitial fluid and pass lymph to afferent lymphatic vessels
what do affernt lymphatic vessels do
carry lymph from capillaries to lymph nodes
lymph nodes
remove foreign substances thru filtering lymph, phagocytosis, and immune reactions
efferent lymphatic
carry lymph from nodes
what do the valves do
ensures one-way flow of lymph
lymp vessels
pass lymph to lymphatic ducts
Role of lymph ducts? what are they?
empty lymph into the junction of jugular and subclavian veins of the CV system
thoracic duct, right lyphmatic duct
purpose of immune system
destroy or neutralize pathogens
what are two examples that describe how immune and lymph system are related
swelling of nodes during infection - could also be a sign of disease (cancer) - and transport of lymphocytes (WBC)
what are the 3 main functions of the lymph system
- drain interstitial fluid
- help carry out immune response
- transport dietary fats
