Positive Psychology
“we believe that a psychology of positive human
functioning will arise, which achieves a scientific
understanding & effective interventions to build
thriving individuals, families, & communities”
(Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000).
One-dimensional theories (Hedonic perspective)
hedonism
individualistic or socially based
focus on fostering positive emotionality
One-dimensional theories (eudaimonic perspective)
focus on fulfilling potential
living in accordance with values & virtues
living well ≠ feeling good
One-dimensional theories (engagement perspective)
focus on involvement in activities of life
intrinsically motivating
freely chosen
realistic & feasible goals
Multidimensional theories
combination of at least 2 of these perspectives
assessment of wellbeing requires multiple measures
Life Events
normative
–> expected (e.g., school)
non-normative
–> unexpected (e.g., separation)
Adaptation
assimilation: keep striving without major alterations to
goals, assumptions, identity
accomodation: required to change goals, assumptions or
identities
Successful completion of normative & non- normative events is associated with greater wellbeing
crisis
the process of resolving competing forces
