Lecture 12 Flashcards
External senses include
Sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch
Internal sensing systems
– Detect internal environment state; hypothalamus plays a central role in numerous internal senses
Neuron Structure
_____ ____: bulk of the cytoplasm sits in basic round shape, hub
Cell body (Soma)
Neuron structure
_______ – receive input, can be highly branched
Dendrites
Neuron structure
____ – send output away from cell body
Axons
______– Cells that provide physical support, help maintain homeostasis in interstitial fluid, and guide neuron growth
Neuroglia
______: Connect one neuron to another within the spinal cord and brain
*makes up 90% of neurons
Interneurons
Microglia –
Immune derived cells that constantly survey the CNS environment, capable of phagocytosing debris
Astrocytes –
Regulate CNS extracellular environment, recycle neurotransmitters released into synapses
Oligodendrocytes –
Cells that coat axons with their cell membrane forming myelin sheaths, promotes faster nerve signal transmission
Ependymocytes –
Line the cavities of the CNS, produces the cerebrospinal fluid that bathes the CNS
