Lecture 11, CNIX - XII Flashcards
Glossopharyngeal nerve functional categories
Branchial
parasympathetic
general somatic sensory
visceral sensory (special and general)
Branchial motor CN IX
stylopharynegues muscle
arises from nucelus ambiguus in medulla
contributes to gag reflex
Parasympathetic CN IX
to parotid gland
nerve arises from inferior salivatory nucleus in pons
leave via tympanic nerve, join lesser petrosal nerve to synapse on otic ganglion
General somatic sensory CN IX
sensation from middle ear, region external auditory meatus, pharynx, and posterior one-third of tongue
inferior and superior glossopharyngeal ganglion , afferent travel to spinal trigeminal nucleus
Visceral sensory (special) CN IX
taste from posterior 1/3 tongue
primary sensory neurons w/cell body in inferior glossopharyngeal ganglion
afferent travel to rostral nucleus solitarius
VIsceral sensory, general CN IX
chemoreceptors and baroreceptors of carotid body
cell body is in inferior glossopharyngeal ganglion, afferents travel to caudal nucleus solitarius
Vagus categories
branchial motor
parasympathetic
general somatic sensory
visceral sensory, special and general
Branchial motor CN X
pharyngeal muscles, swallowing, laryngeal muscles, voice box
nucleus ambiguus
Parasympathetic CN X
heart, lungs, and digestive tract
preganglionic = arise from dorsal motor nucleus forms vagal trigone
postganglionic = found in terminal ganglia
General somatic sensory CN X
sensation from pharynx, meninges, and region near external auditory meatus
cell body = superior vagal ganglion
synapses on spinal trigeminal nucleus
Visceral sensory, special CN X
taste from epiglottis and pharynx
1st order is in inferior vagal ganglion
afferent reach for rostral nucleus solitarius
Visceral sensory, general
chemoreceptors and baroreceptors of aortic arch and gastrointestinal tract
1st order in inferior vagal ganglion
afferents go to caudal nucleus solitarius
Spinal Accessory categories
branchial motor
Branchia Motor CN XI
SCM and upper part of traps
does not arise from cranial nerves
spinal accesory nucleus –> branchial motor fibers
Hypoglossal categories
somatic motor
