LECTURE 10: KIN OF KNEE Flashcards
What are the two joints to consider at the knee?
Tibiofemoral
Patellofemoral
What is the closed pack position of the tibiofemoral joint?
Full extension with external tibial rotation
What is the typical dislocation at the tibiofemoral joint?
Tibia moves posterior or anterior but uncommon
What movements are permitted at the tibiofemoral joint?
Flex-ex
Lock/unlock mechanism
How many ligaments are at the tibiofemoral?
8
What are the ligaments at the knee?
Medial collateral
Lateral collateral
ACL
PCL
Oblique popliteal
Arcuate popliteal
Coronary
Patellomeniscal
Transverse
Meniscofemoral
What does the meniscofemoral ligament do?
Secures lateral meniscus to PCL and medial femoral condyle
What does the patellomeniscal ligament do?
Hold menisci to posterior patella
What does the transverse ligament do?
Holds the two menisci together
What does the coronary menisci do?
Hold menisci to tibial plateau
What does the arcuate popliteal ligament do?
Limits extension and varus on extended knee, reinforces posterior lateral joint
What does the oblique popliteal ligament do?
Limits extension and vagus on an extended knee, reinforces posterior medial joint
Tendinous expansion of Semimembranosus
What does the PCL do?
Prevents tibia from moving posterior on femur.
Limits hyperflexion and hyperextension
Primary stabilizer at 90 degrees knee flex
Supported by quads
Intracapsular, extrasynovial
What does the ACL do?
Prevents tibia from moving anterior on femur
Limits hyperextension
Supported by hamstrings
Intracapsular, extrasynovial
What does the lateral collateral do?
Checks varus stress, extension and lateral rotation
Does not attach to capsule or menisci
