lecture 10 cont water Flashcards

1
Q

Properties of water

A
  • Water is a polar molecule
    • Water has properties that are critical to all life
    • Has a negative and a positive zone
      Polarity - weak (transient)

Q

why is water polarity weak

A
  • Polarity - weak (transient)
    ○ Hydrogen bonds form btwen water molecules
Individually weak bond, resulting in key characteristics of water

Q

Properties resulting from polarity and H bonds?

A
  1. Cohesion - holding together of like substances (water molecules)
    1. Adhesion - holding together of unlike substances (water molecules with other things)
    2. High specific heat - amount of energy (heat) needed to raise 1g of water by 1 degree C (absorbs a lot of heat- cools surroundings) (this is bc of polarity)
    3. High heat of vaporization - quantity of heat needed to convert 1g liquid to gas

Q

blue vs green water?

A
  • Blue water - water that pools
    • Green water - water in ecosystems
More green water than blue - more flowing through our ecological system

6
Q

desribe interception

A
  • Interception - foggy environments - humidity in air is high enough for the water to condense onto surface - can be harvested in aired environments
Substancial (10-50%) in closed canopy forests

Q

describe Throughfall + stem floe

A

Throughfall and stemflow- interception of water by plants impacts the flow - stemflow = canopy draws the water down the stem - catching water and directing it so its more available to the plant

8
Q

how does stem flow enhance water flow

A

Stemflow - enhances flow by creating little spaces + stem adheres water = water goes down toward root system + help make it go deeper into the root system and less available to competition
