Lecture 10 Flashcards
What is developmental psychology?
the study of _____
What stages of life does developmental psychology touch on?
prenatal environment, infancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood
What is the prenatal stage?
the stage from conception to birth
What is the germinal stage?
from conception through the first 2 weeks
Where is a zygote found?
in the germinal stage
What is a zygote?
a single cell that contains chromosomes from both a sperm and an egg
What is the embryonic stage?
the period of prenatal development that lasts from the 2nd week until about the 8th week
What do we call the cells in the embryonic stage?
an embryo
What is the fetal stage?
the period of prenatal development that lasts from the 9th week until birth
What do you we call the cells in the fetal stage?
a fetus
What does the placenta do?
links the mother’s bloodstream to he developing embryo or fetus
What are teratogens?
things that negatively impact the development of a baby before it is born
What is fetal alcohol syndrome?
a development disorder that stems from heavy alcohol use by the mother during pregnancy
What are examples of teratogens?
smoking, drinking alcohol, radiation, x-rays, and mercury poisoning
What is SIDS and what are the causes?
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome; smoking and drinking during pregnancy
What decreases the cause of SIDS?
using pacifiers and breastfeeding
What is infancy?
the stage of development that begins at birth and lasts generally until the baby is walking (toddlerhood)
What is motor development?
the emergence of the ability to execute physical action
What are reflexes?
specific patterns of motor response that are triggered by specific patterns of sensory stimulation
What is the rooting reflex?
when you feel the side of a baby’s face and they turn their head that way
What is the sucking reflex?
when you put something in the baby’s mouth and they start to suck
Why is the sucking reflex important?
it is needed for the baby to breastfeed
At what age does walking and talking start?
12 months
What is cognitive development?
the emergence of the ability to understand the world
What are Piaget’s stages of development?
sensorimotor stage, pre operational stage, concrete operational stage, and formal operational stage
What is the sensorimotor stage?
(birth - infancy) with schemas and object permanence (8 months/4-7mon)
What is the pre
