What is Adapted Physical Activity according to the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity (IFAPA)?
Adapted physical activity (APA) is a professional branch of kinesiology / physical education / sport & human movement sciences, which is directed toward persons who require adaptation for participation in the context of physical activity.
What does APA involve?
Involves individuals with:
- Disabilities
- people who experience obesity
- aging
- individuals with restricted participation
APA is about…
- Individualization of instructions
- Matching personal Strengths
Why is APA about Individualization?
To promote full participation in PA, regardless of who is engaging.
To create an APA-friendly environment, we need to design and modify:
- Equipment
- Task
- Instructions
- Physical and social environments
- Rules
What is the percentage of people that experience significant disability?
1.3 billion people (16% of population) – or 1 in 6 people worldwide
How does disability affect people around the world?
– Have generally poorer health
– Lower education achievements/opportunities
– Fewer economic opportunities
– Higher rates of poverty
- 6x harder access to health facilities
- 15x harder to find transportation
- face inequities like discrimination, stigma, poverty, exclusion from education and employment, and barriers in the health system.
Why is APA Important?
a) To encourage and promote the participation, to the fullest extent possible, of persons with disabilities in mainstream sporting activities at all levels;
To ensure that persons with disabilities have:
b) an opportunity to organize, develop and participate in disability-specific sporting and recreational activities and, to this end, encourage the provision, on an equal basis with others, of appropriate instruction, training and resources;
c) access to sporting, recreational and tourism venues;
d) equal access with other children to participation in play, recreation and leisure and sporting activities, including those activities in the school system;
(e) access to services from those involved in the organization of recreational, tourism, leisure and sporting activities.
Disability:
- Is part of being human and is essential to the human experience.
- Can be understood in various ways, using different models, languages and tool.
According to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health, disability is?
“a phenomenon that reflects an interaction between the person’s body and the society in which they live.” And the idea of the environment that might be the one disabling people.
Disability can be understood as an umbrella term covering:
1- Impairment
2- Activity Limitation
3- Participation Restriction:
Define Impairment:
a difference in body function or structure.
Define Activity Limitation:
difficulty experienced by the individual in performing a task or action.
Define Participation Restriction:
a problem experienced by an individual while involving in life situations (barriers imposed by societal attitudes, architecture, social policies…)
According to WHO the definition of Disability is:
Disability is an umbrella term, covering impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions
