Lecture 1 Basics Flashcards
Zhong Qi
stored?
formed by?
function?
Air Qi
- stored in chest
- formed by combo qing qi (clean air qi) + gu qi (food essence qi)
- promotes lung’s functions of controlling respiration
- promotes heart’s function of dominating the blood & blood vessels
- circulation of qi & blood, coldness & warmth, and motor function of the 4 limbs & trunk
Yuan Qi
Primary Qi / Pre-Natal Qi / Original Qi
- needs to be supplemented and nourished by food essence
- rooted in kidneys and transported through body by Triple Warmer
- the greater the yuan qi, the greater the zang-fu activity & vice versa
can be depleted by:
- poor diet
- prolonged illness requiring more qi
- increased ejaculations/pregnancies
Ying Qi
Food Essence Qi / Nutritive Qi
- refined form of Gu Qi
- from food extracted by the spleen & stomach
- circulates to the vessels
- functions to produce blood and circulate with it
Wei Qi
Defensive Qi
- immunity
- derived from Ying Qi - food essence qi
- circulates outside vessels
- defends against EPIs (#1 function)
- protects muscular surface
- controls opening of the pores
- moistens skin & hair
- makes adjustments of body temperature
- warms up zang-fu organs
Zang-Fu organ qi
- combines all forms of qi
Heart’s relationship to Blood
moves blood
Spleen’s relationship to Blood
contains blood within the vessels
Liver’s relationship to Blood
stores blood & ensures smooth circulation of blood
“__ is the commander of Blood, and Blood is the mother of __”
Qi
Qi is yang & it moves blood
blood is yin and gives body nutritional substance to carry
w/o qi, blood would be inert fluid
Blood formed from __ + __?
gu qi + qing qi
unrefined food essence + clean air
Gu Qi from the ______ rises to the chest where it is acted upon by Kidney Essence and Yuan Qi.
Gu Qi from the Sp/St rises to the chest where it is acted upon by Kidney Essence and Yuan Qi.
At this point it is known as Blood.
After being sent to the chest and being turned into Blood, blood is not complete until it is sent to the ____ and Qing Qi is added
lung
4 functions of Blood
- nourishment & moisture
- nourishes hair, sinews, bones & bowels
- foundation of mental activities
- nutrition
Jin
thin fluids
- circulate w/defensive qi
- controlled by the Lung
- warm & nourish mm & moisten skin
- clear & watery in nature
- found on mucus membranes & the skin
- becomes fluid portion of blood
Ye
thick fluids
- circulate with nutritive qi
- controlled by the spleen and kidney
- lubricates joint cavities, bone marrow & CSF
- turbid & viscous in nature
- found in the bowels, brain, bones & viscera
Fluid metabolism
- begins @ stomach where fluids are churned and separated
- spleen further separates fluid & ascends the pure to the lung & descends the impure to the small intestine
- SI functions to separate pure from impure & sends pure to stomach & spleen and impure to LI or UB
- lungs send more refined portion to skin; less refined portion to kidneys
- kidneys send a steam up to the Lungs to keep them moist
